Operations Center Concept
Chattanooga, TN
This operations center is a vibrant, forward-thinking workspace where natural elements and intentional design come together to support both productivity and well-being. From the project’s outset, the client emphasized a desire for an environment that felt less like a traditional office and more like a warm, welcoming space, while also incorporating practical solutions for industrial functions.
Some notable design features include CLT and mass timber construction (with exposed wood structure and wall finishes); a large storefront/curtain wall opening and clerestory windows that allow abundant natural light into both the office and warehouse spaces; and galvalume exterior wall and roof panels, along with solar panels on the exterior covered parking and storage structures.
Spanning over 30,000 interior square feet, this new build was thoughtfully designed to strike a balance between functionality and hospitality. Central to the concept was biophilic and sustainable design, with a goal of achieving LEED Gold accreditation. Recognized as an innovation leader in Chattanooga, the client inspired our team to develop a design solution that embodies their visionary goals.
To bring this vision to life, the design team collaborated with regional and national mass timber manufacturers and consultants to create a structural frame using mass timber and glulam posts and beams, and to incorporate CLT (Cross-Laminated Timber) panels for both interior and exterior walls. These mass timber elements created an exposed structural frame and walls with a natural wood finish, offering a sustainable solution while enhancing the user experience through the warmth and texture of natural wood. The custom-designed system is completely independent of the desks, preserving the flexibility and ergonomic functionality of sit/stand workstations.
This would be the first mass timber and CLT building in Chattanooga and one of only a handful in the Southeast region.
The result is a dynamic and inviting environment that not only meets the functional needs of a modern workplace but also reflects the company’s commitment to innovation, wellness, and community.
