Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office

Hamilton County sought to provide its Medical Examiner’s Office with a facility that reflects the importance and sensitivity of its work while meeting the growing needs of the region it serves. The client’s goal was to replace an undersized, deteriorating building with a modern, efficient environment that protects privacy, accommodates advanced forensic technology, and supports staff in delivering timely, respectful service to families, law enforcement, and the broader community.

In response, the Tinker Ma led design team balanced creativity with rigorous technical coordination. The 12,000-square-foot renovation fully gutted and rebuilt the interior while reskinning the existing shell to create a cohesive, contemporary presence along Holtzclaw Avenue in Chattanooga. A uniquely shaped public entrance establishes a clear civic identity, while a carefully designed sally port provides space for all decedent deliveries to be discreetly screened from public view, which is an essential operational and ethical requirement. Working closely with the Medical Examiner, staff, and specialized consultants, the team meticulously planned secure circulation, equipment placement, and workflow sequences, integrating advanced forensic equipment within a resilient, code-compliant framework supported by structural and MEP expertise.

The renewed forensic center will equip the county with the space, privacy, and operational clarity required to serve the community. By aligning architectural expression with highly specialized technical needs, the project delivers an efficient facility that will support critical public health and justice services while honoring the sensitivity of the work and services performed.
